The cut renews with the member
A one-off sale pays a platform once. A membership is billed again every cycle, so Patreon takes its share of the same pledge each month for as long as the patron stays.
The flat piece lands on every pledge
The Patreon payment fee carries a fixed amount per charge, and pledges tend to be small and billed one at a time, so the fixed part punches well above its size here.
Currency mismatches cost extra
A member who pays in a currency different from your payout currency triggers a conversion fee on top of the stack. It is waived only when the two currencies match.
Discord access runs itself
Patreon grants a member their Discord roles when they link their account and removes them when the pledge lapses or a payment declines. That plumbing is mature, vendor-documented and genuinely hands-off.
What Patreon charges on a sale
Every rate the calculator uses, linked to the Patreon page it came from. The Patreon alternatives list quotes the same charges in Patreon’s own words, with the dates each one was read, and says where its sellers go.
Every newly published page sits on the standard plan, which takes a percentage of each successfully processed membership or one-time purchase, with the Patreon payment fee coming off each charge on top. It is Patreon’s own per-charge fee, taken in addition to the platform fee. Patreon is the merchant of record, so member payments run through Patreon rather than through an account you control, and this part of the cost cannot be shopped around or brought down by connecting anything of your own. PayPal and Venmo payments from outside the US carry a higher rate, quoted in the breakdown below.
Once a month. Member payments accumulate in your creator balance, automatic payouts are initiated early in the month whenever that balance is positive, and the money then takes a few more days to arrive. A short hold also applies after you add or change payout details, and sending the balance anywhere costs a small per-payout fee that varies by method. All of it is sourced below.
Often, yes. The currency conversion fee applies whenever a payment is made in a currency different from your payout currency, and it only goes away when the two match. Separately, PayPal and Venmo payments from outside the US carry a higher Patreon payment fee than the standard rate.
Purchases made through Apple’s in-app system carry Apple’s App Store fee, and Patreon’s platform fee still applies on top of it. Patreon adds no extra payment fee of its own on those transactions, so the App Store cut is the whole difference, and Patreon documents it openly.
Nothing per sale, on every plan including the free one, and that holds for recurring subscriptions just as it does for one-off purchases, so a long-standing member never becomes a growing bill. Access can follow the subscription too: Discord and Telegram gating grants access when a membership starts and revokes it when it lapses. What the free plan gives up is headroom rather than rates: 500 MB of storage, files up to 50 MB, and no custom domain until you upgrade.
