How Lemon Squeezy’s fees work

Lemon Squeezy quotes a single headline rate, and the number that reaches your payout is that rate plus whichever surcharges your sale happened to trigger.

The headline rate is the floor

Surcharges stack on top of the base cut. A card from abroad adds one, a PayPal checkout another, a subscription renewal, an abandoned-cart recovery, an affiliate referral. Each one is listed with its source in the breakdown below.

The cut includes the tax

The fee is charged on the total order value with tax included. When Lemon Squeezy collects VAT on a sale, it takes its percentage of that VAT too. Its own fee docs say so, quoted below.

Payouts run on a fixed calendar

Sales are held for around two weeks, then paid out twice a month once your balance clears the minimum. Sending the money can itself carry a charge outside the US. All sourced below.

The licensing is the real thing

Its license API can activate, validate and deactivate keys, with per-key activation limits and expiry tied to the subscription. If your software has to phone home, that is genuine infrastructure you are buying.

What Lemon Squeezy charges on a sale

Every rate the calculator uses, linked to the Lemon Squeezy page it came from. The Lemon Squeezy alternatives list quotes the same charges in Lemon Squeezy’s own words, with the dates each one was read, and says where its sellers go.

The base charge is a percentage of the sale plus a flat amount per transaction, and that is the least you will pay. Anything conditional about the sale, from where the buyer’s card was issued to how the checkout was reached, can add its own surcharge on top. Set your price above for the base charge, then read the breakdown below for what each condition adds on top.

No. Its pricing page says there are no monthly charges for ecommerce features and that it only takes a cut of each sale. That genuinely suits a store with slow months, since the cost scales to nothing when sales do. The trade is that in a good month the cut scales up with you, which is what the yearly figure above is showing.

No, and this is the strongest thing about the platform. Lemon Squeezy is the merchant of record, so it registers, collects and remits sales tax and VAT worldwide and carries the liability itself. Two things follow from that: the paperwork is off your desk entirely, and because its fee is charged on the tax-inclusive total, part of what you pay is a cut of the tax it collected.

No page of theirs says so, and no shutdown date or migration deadline has been published. What is documented is that Stripe acquired the company and now describes Stripe Managed Payments as the path forward, with the stated goal of giving Lemon Squeezy users an easy way to migrate, and that signing up now leads to a form recommending a Stripe product rather than straight to a store. Worth weighing before you build on it.

No. On a refund, the refunded amount minus the platform fee comes out of your next payout, so the fee stays spent. A chargeback costs more: the refunded amount plus a flat dispute charge. The vendor’s own refunds article is the source and is quoted in the breakdown below.

Nothing per sale, on every plan including the free one, and there is no stack of surcharges waiting behind the headline. Buyers pay you directly, so nothing sits in a balance on a payout calendar. What the free plan gives up is headroom rather than rates: 500 MB of storage, files up to 50 MB, and no custom domain until you upgrade to Pro.
