ByteSell vs Payhip

Published
July 31, 2026

TL;DR

Payhip runs three plans: the free one takes 5% of each sale, Plus is $29 a month at 2%, and Pro is $99 a month at 0%. ByteSell is 0% at any volume, on the free plan and on both paid ones.

This page compares the plan you actually land on, Payhip Free, against ByteSell Free. Both cost nothing a month. Payhip takes 5% of everything you sell and ByteSell takes none of it. If you want Payhip itself to charge 0%, that is the $99 plan. The calculator has Plus and Pro in its dropdown if you are already on one of those.

On the published rates, ByteSell Free charges less than Payhip at every volume, at an average order value of $50. There is no revenue figure where the other one comes out cheaper.

Every Payhip figure and limit is quoted from its own pages, linked in the fee breakdown above.

What each one takes

Payhip prints its rates on one line per plan: 5% free, 2% on the $29 Plus, 0% on the $99 Pro. The 5% is the number most sellers meet, because the free plan is where everyone starts and it has no revenue cap forcing an upgrade.

Yes, PayPal and Stripe will still charge at their standard rates once they complete a transaction. This applies for all plans.
payhip.com/pricing

That applies to Pro as well, so the $99 plan advertised as having no transaction fee still carries a per-sale cost. Payhip says so plainly on its own pricing page, which is more than most of its competitors manage.

What Payhip gates

The answer is that Payhip gates nothing at all, which happens to be the strongest thing about the product and the part most comparison pages skip.

At Payhip, our goal is to make pricing as simple and transparent as possible. So, no feature-gating here! You will get access to all of our amazing features to help you grow your business, even on our free plan.
payhip.com/pricing

On Payhip, paying more buys you a lower percentage and nothing else. ByteSell does gate a few things by plan, all listed on the pricing page, so on this particular measure Payhip has the cleaner design.

When you get the money

Both products handle payouts the same way, which is to say neither of them really has payouts. Payhip sends each sale straight to the processor the seller connected, and ByteSell works identically.

We will deposit your sales to you immediately after a transaction has been completed. Not quite the speed of light, but close.
payhip.com/pricing

There is no hold, no minimum and no payout fee on either side, so if you are weighing these two on cash flow you can save yourself the trouble. The difference that actually moves money is the percentage.

Which processors you can use

Payhip supports thirteen processors, which is more than ByteSell and useful outside the US and Europe.

Payhip now offers a total of 13 payment processors, allowing sellers from all over the world to distribute their products!
help.payhip.com

The same help article carries a caveat worth knowing before you count all thirteen as options you can run side by side.

In most cases, you are able to connect PayPal plus one other payment processor for card and other applicable payment types.
help.payhip.com

ByteSell takes cards through Stripe or PayPal and crypto straight to the seller’s own wallet, with more gateways like Paystack and Razorpay on the way. If your buyers pay through one of those today, Payhip already supports it.

Who handles the tax

Payhip does, and this is a real difference that runs against ByteSell.

We are defined as a marketplace facilitator in the US. This means we would have the obligation of collecting and paying sales tax instead of you as the creator.
help.payhip.com

Payhip says the same about EU VAT for buyers in the European Union. ByteSell is non-custodial and is not a merchant of record, so the seller stays the merchant on every sale and handles their own tax. That works out to less paperwork on Payhip and more control on ByteSell, and which trade you prefer probably comes down to how much you enjoy filing.

How much of the storefront you control

Payhip storefronts run on a fixed template. You can set your logo, your colors and a custom domain, and there is no route to a theme you choose or code yourself. The template is clean and the checkout works, so plenty of sellers will never want anything else.

ByteSell puts the store on your own domain with theme selection that goes as far as fully custom-coded themes, so the shelf can carry your design as well as your name. Payhip has spent its effort elsewhere, on the free tier, the tax handling and the thirteen processors, which for a lot of sellers is the better priority. It is worth deciding which of those you are actually buying before you commit either way.

Everything Payhip charges

ByteSell takes 0% per sale and nothing to pay you out, because your buyers pay your own Stripe, PayPal or wallet directly. Here is what Payhip charges, each line quoted from its own pages with a link to where it was read.

Where Payhip is the better choice

Payhip is the better choice if any of this describes you.

  • You want tax handled for you

Payhip collects and remits sales tax and EU VAT. ByteSell leaves that to you.

  • Your buyers pay through a local processor

Paystack, Razorpay, Flutterwave and five more, live today. ByteSell is Stripe and PayPal.

  • Your files are big

ByteSell Free stops at 50 MB a file and 500 MB in total, so a heavy catalogue starts on Pro.

  • You want every feature on the free plan

Payhip gates nothing behind a higher tier.

Which one to pick

Payhip Free and ByteSell Free are different shapes of bill. Both cost nothing a month. Payhip then takes 5% of everything you sell, which grows with every sale you make, and ByteSell takes nothing at any volume. What Payhip’s free plan gives you in exchange is room: our free tier holds 500 MB with files up to 50 MB, and a heavier catalogue moves to Pro at $29.

Tax handling and processor coverage are genuine reasons to choose Payhip. The reason to choose ByteSell is that once revenue is steady, the percentage never comes back. Neither argument applies to every seller, which is what the calculator is for.

ByteSell is in early access, so that link goes to the signup list rather than a checkout. The plans and limits described here match the ByteSell pricing page, which has the full breakdown.

Frequently asked questions

Still stuck? Talk to us

The plan itself costs nothing, but the sales are metered: Payhip’s free tier takes 5% of each one, and Stripe or PayPal charge their standard rates on top. There is no product limit and no revenue limit.

No. Pro is Payhip’s 0% tier, and it costs $99 a month to reach. ByteSell charges 0% on every plan, including the free one.

Both products have the seller connect their own Stripe or PayPal account, so the payment side moves by reconnecting the same account. Products and files have to be uploaded again. ByteSell is in early access, so the practical answer is to get on the list and try it before moving anything real.

Payhip handles it. As a marketplace facilitator in the US it collects and remits sales tax instead of the seller, and it treats EU VAT the same way. ByteSell is non-custodial and not a merchant of record, so the seller is responsible for their own tax.
