ByteSell vs Gumroad
- Published
- July 31, 2026
TL;DR
Gumroad charges no monthly fee, which suits a seller making almost nothing. The trouble shows up later, because the 10% + $0.50 never falls, so the platform’s cut grows in lockstep with your revenue for as long as you sell there.
ByteSell prices it the other way around. The free plan costs nothing a month and takes 0% per sale, so there is no revenue figure at which Gumroad’s 10% comes out ahead. What the paid plans buy is room rather than a lower rate, and the calculator above runs both sides on their published numbers.
Gumroad’s pricing page says “No hidden fees, no monthly charges.” Its help center says the 10% + $0.50 “does not include: Credit card processing (2.9% + $0.30) / PayPal fees.” Both pages were read on July 22, 2026.
On the published rates, ByteSell Free charges less than Gumroad at every volume, at an average order value of $50. There is no revenue figure where the other one comes out cheaper.

The cut never falls
Gumroad’s pricing page carries one rate, 10% + $0.50, and describes what it applies to.
Per transaction for all sales through your profile or direct links to your customers.
There is no volume tier and no plan that buys you out of it, so a seller doing $500 a month pays the same rate as one doing $50,000. On the second of those, the 10% alone comes to $5,000 a month.
Sales that arrive through Gumroad’s own marketplace cost even more.
Sales made through Gumroad’s marketplace (discovery sales via Gumroad.com) are subject to a flat 30% fee, which includes all processing fees.
That charge is easier to defend, since Gumroad found the buyer for you. It only lands as a surprise on sellers who did not realize Discover was switched on.
What "a small percentage" comes to
Gumroad frames the whole model on its pricing page, and the framing is the part worth reading closely.
Unlike other platforms, Gumroad doesn't charge you a monthly fee. Instead, our fees are deducted as a small percentage of every sale, so we only make money when you do.
The alignment argument is real at the bottom of the range. A seller seeing no sales pays Gumroad nothing, and no flat subscription can match that. The small percentage is 10% + $0.50, and because it never steps down, the same sentence describes a store doing $200 a month and a store doing $200,000.
ByteSell inverts which end of that range it is built for. The subscription is charged whether you sell anything or not, which is worse on a dead month and the honest cost of the model. What you get for it is a platform cut of 0% that stays 0% at every volume, so the bill stops tracking your revenue the moment you sign up. The calculator above puts the crossover in dollars for your own numbers.
The $100 minimum and the seven-day hold
This is the part that catches people out, and Gumroad states it plainly in its help center.
You need a minimum balance of $100 USD to receive a payout. Some countries have higher local currency minimums
All sales have a minimum 7-day holding period in your Gumroad balance before they become eligible for payout.
In practice, a seller sitting at $80 is looking at money they cannot yet withdraw. Taking the eventual payout through PayPal costs another 2%, and the US-only instant option costs 3%.
ByteSell never holds a balance in the first place. The buyer pays straight into the seller’s own Stripe, PayPal or wallet, so the question of minimums and holding periods simply does not come up.
What the 10% does not buy
Gumroad sells you a page on gumroad.com. It is a good page, and it is the same page every other Gumroad seller has, which is fine until your product needs to look like it came from you. There is no custom domain with your own theme behind it, and no route to a storefront you control.
The delivery layer stops at the download too. Gumroad has no crypto checkout, no Telegram gating without a third-party bot, no license-key pool, and no checkout filtering for VPN, Tor, proxy or disposable-email traffic. Its analytics are a dashboard without funnels or custom reports. On ByteSell those sit on every plan including the free one, alongside PDF stamping that writes the buyer’s identity into every file they download.
One thing Gumroad does hand over, and it deserves stating because several platforms in this dataset do not: the buyer list is yours. Customer email addresses land in your Sales dashboard and download as a CSV whenever you want them, so leaving Gumroad does not mean leaving your customers behind.
Gumroad gives its fee back on a refund
The opposite gets claimed about Gumroad often enough to be worth setting straight.
When a sale is refunded, Gumroad’s own fee on the refunded portion is returned to you; only the underlying payment-processing portion of the fee is retained, because payment processors do not return it on a refund.
On chargebacks, Gumroad says it absorbs the network penalties and charges no fee of its own, though payouts pause automatically above a 3% chargeback rate. That is a better deal than several platforms that market themselves as cheaper.

Which one to pick
Gumroad is a good product carrying a pricing model that punishes success. At low revenue it is about the cheapest way to sell anything, while at high revenue it becomes one of the most expensive, and the crossover between the two is a specific dollar figure for every seller.
Put your own monthly revenue into the calculator above and see which side of that line you land on.
